The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), assists the countries in the Americas implementing the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) since 2003.

A core set of standardized questions help in comparing indicators across countries and monitoring health-related risk and protective behaviors, among students 13 to 15 years of age, grouped under the following categories:

Alcohol
Physical Activity
Diet
Protective Factors
Drugs
Sexual and Reproductive Health
Hygiene
Tobacco
Mental Health
Violence
Unintentional Injuries

The GSHS is part of a global surveillance system developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with UNICEF, UNESCO and UNAIDS, with technical assistance from the CDC.
